Hi Team

First of all many thanks to all that made it happen.

The Goju-Kai Open had a record number of Goju-Kai entries as everyone is honing their skills in preparation for the upcoming Goju-Kai Globals in Japan. It was also the largest Goju Kai Open so far.

We all witnessed some extraordinary performances and there has been massive improvement across the board.

GOLD 10

13 time National Champ and 4 time World Champ, Craig Soley showed us why he was crowned King of Kumite! In a blistering return to the tatami we saw Shihan display the strength and smarts of one who knows his way under pressure without conceding a point. The entire squad was in awe and are definitely eager for some ring craft clinics from one of the greatest fighters Hanshi has produced.

Jes Bromley (Open Kumite) doing what he loves best and getting a great compliment from Craig Shihan..."The Heir Apparent"...made my day!...however big shoes to fill.

Lilli Mateljan (Open Kumite) did a Miley Cyrus and bought a wrecking ball. This young woman has guts and skills, she can definitely mix it up with the Nations best. Lil was dominating.

Xsenija Bromley (Open Kata) was a total powerhouse smashing out katas with strength and speed but still managing to look elegant whilst putting on her best sizzle.

Teo Roberts (Junior Kata) just a legend getting stronger each comp.

Dan Sharp (Vets Kata).....Daniel San racking up a few Golds this season as well as producing a few champs and reffing. Total commitment and dedication.

Melina Gotsis(Cadet Kumite) This girl has major skills in reading her opponent’s intentions and exploiting openings. This gave her the winning edge adding to her ever growing pot of Gold.

Reece Miyamoto (Cadet Kumite)..Positioning, distance control, and the ability to enter and exit quickly were crucial for Reece winning this cliffhanger against great buddy and team mate Kota..Reece you were never going to give up.

Nikki Teo Bussemaker (u/14) DOUBLE GOLD 4rth double Elite Gold in a row!!!! and threw down a Superumpei for the final of her Kata. Being able to produce this with such a level of excellence, way to go Nik. In Kumite she used feints, rapid combinations, and changes in rhythm to outmaneuver her opponent. Her tool box is massive.

Development GOLD 6

Charley Carver (u/14) DOUBLE GOLD.. Your journey has just started. Keep training. Keep learning. And never lose the spirit that got you here in the first place. You are a feisty competitor Charley and you are just getting better and better.

Coby Johnson (u/12) DOUBLE GOLD...We are so proud of what you’ve accomplished. You stood on the mat, faced real pressure, and came out victorious. That takes heart. That takes courage. That takes the spirit of a true Karateka.

Ash O'Sullivan (u/10) DOUBLE GOLD...What a little Champ. Every hour you spent training, every drill, every sparring session—it all came together in this moment. Your timing, your control, your movement—it wasn’t luck. It was the result of your commitment and hard work.

SILVER 7

Matt Bussemaker (Vet Kumite)...losing to Shihan Craig. Matt I thought you were so courageous and you won the quote of the day " I'm happy, nothing is broken or bleeding!" Love the spirit

Pula Thilakarathne (Vet Kata) Crisp and clean, with good depth to your movements.

Kathryn Malanczak (Open Kumite) This athlete has alway displayed superior footwork. She has solid, adaptable stance that allows balance, speed, and agility.

Teo Roberts (Junior Kumite) After a much anticipated return from injury Teo didn't disappoint. No matter how hard he got hit he just kept getting up. Unfortunately Teo had to withdraw in the final phase of the Gold medal bout due to injury whilst he was ahead on points. However his lightning fast Kizami zuki has left a lasting impression.

Kota Roberts (Cadet Kumite)...Kota the Titan...Kota the giant slayer...Kota, the boy who wouldn't give up. Seriously a spectacular return to the tatami. These Roberts boys take "tuff" pills!

Vincenzo Lozzi (Vet Kata) A man of clearly many talents. It was great to see you do so well Vince and you are such a great role model to little Vince. Nono was mixing it up with the old boys!

Essa Baer (Cadet Developing Kata)This is a great effort Essa. The coaches had mentioned that your breathing and rhythm had really improved as with your mental focus. Keep up the good work!

BRONZE 5

Mark Smith (Vet Kumite and Kata)..Mark you are just a solid consistent all rounder who embodies the true spirit of Goju Kai. I love the rivalry and camaraderie that we have in our vets group. You are all great role models to your families.

Melina Gotsis (Cadet Kata) This kumite girl also does well in Kata and always lays down a solid performance.

Jes Bromley (Open Kata) Your Kata performances are still very sharp and powerful.

Athlete of the Day

This is a killer category with so many contenders. I was so impressed with Antman Matelgan (giving it to Com Games Bronze medalist), Jesse Johnson (fighting the best I have seen him perform) , and Vince junior doing epic in the peewee kata and kumite. Just so many brilliant performances...but one did stand out as one of the most courageous and that was Jacob Suda (Junior Kumite +68kg). Jacob was merged into the open division and came up against the formidable Mitch Edwards, former National Champ. Jacob did not give up and really gave it all he had against a much more experienced athlete. He won Bronze. We are very proud of you Jacob!

Also congratulations to Olivia and Henry winning their first round and Toby staying positive when thing didn’tt go his way.

Well Done Team Goju

To all of those that did not medal we are still so proud that you are out there, training and giving it your best.

One more Karate League Tournament before the Nationals and then onto Japan!

What another fantastic night at the Karate WA Gala State Awards. It was a display of glamour with our students and parents rising to the occasion with incredible glitz.

Brian Mackie's Goju Kai was extremely well represented amongst all the accolades.

Firstly the Merit of service award which is 6 years or more of continual support of WAKF events, showing consistency and reliability in volunteering roles. This award went to AKO ROBERTS who has shown constant teamwork and positive engagement with the community. We were all screeching with pride. Well done Ako.

The State Athlete Award celebrated the highest scoring athlete in that division over the 2024 period.

Nikki Teo-Bussemaeker has been a standout performer in Western Australian karate, particularly in the kata discipline. She has won this award for 3 consecutive years following in the footsteps of the incredible Teo Roberts who has again won the State Kata award for the 6th or 7th year running. Both of these athletes showed tremendous dedication and consistency throughout 2024. Nikki's skill mastery has seen her accelerated to a higher training group within the state body, again acknowledging her existing potential. Well done Nik! Teo's light just keeps shining brighter and brighter each year!

Our two State coaches gained further recognition. Shihan Brigit and Sensei Au received honours last night amongst a highly respected and dedicated group of coaches from all styles. I know our squad members appreciate having you both there at State training. This kind of Goju representation is invaluable and certainly has an impact on the Karate community as a whole.

Jes and Xsenija Bromley were selected in the Karate WA leadership team that will become a vital conduit between athletes, coaches and the Board to the High Performance Pathway Program soon to be launched by the WAKF. It's the first time that sibblings have been selected into the Leadership program and a solid testament to the leadership values that both of these athletes bring. It's a great recognition of Goju-Kai.

Xsenija's night got even better with the announcement that she was the 2025 State Kata Captain!... a true honour ...let it sizzle!!

Congratulations to Nikki, Reece, Jes and Xsenija for your selection to the 2025 State Team!

Sensei Frank and the Board had happy smiles as it was an action packed fast paced night with lots of giveaways, laughs and a whole lot of cheering.

What a night for Goju-Kai! ...we lost Sensei Gail, we found sensei Gail... Jes didn't get a role in the new Karate Kid Movie (inside joke you had to be there!)....we won lots of accolades and Karate Kid Movie Tickets and we are now trailblazing to Japan!!

See you all at the Goju Kai Open in a couple of weeks.

Had a call from my seven year old boys principle today to tell me there had been an incident at school involving him and his mates in year two and a group of year four boys. The younger boys were rough housing when the year four boys muscled in on the action. One bigger boy took exception to my boy and shoved him in the back forcing him to the ground face first.
My son then got up and was immediately taunted by the older boys to strike this kid. "Punch him in the face" to which my son replied that it wasn't the right thing to do and walked away.So the principle had called to congratulate my boy on his coolheaded approach. Thank you Sensei basil for not only teaching my son how to defend himself but also how to handle himself under pressure. So proud.

If a karate club was rated just on its national and international success, then this club would be one of the best, but Basil Shihan’s club has far more to offer than just success in competition. It is a welcoming community where kids and adults learn life skills, respect and discipline at the same time as learning the graceful art of Goju Kai. My 11 year old daughter has been to many clubs in the five years that she has been doing karate. She loves this one.
